This tune started out as an interesting sinuous chord progression that cried out for some kind of intricate melody on top. With the melody in place, it seemed like a really cool idea to add some counterpoint to weave in and out of the chord patterns. Pretty soon the tune evolved into an interwoven musical fabric that was pretty different from anything I had written before. The dynamics of the tune made me think of the complicated freeway interchanges in the Bay Area with streams of cars going in multiple directions over bridges and overpasses. True to form, Counterflow is once again in 5/4! From the outset, I knew it was a piece for vibes as the lead and I think it worked out great that way.
